Local Politics Matter!

So today's municipal election day here in Massachusetts, and I know what you're thinking – "Great, another lecture about civic duty from my real estate agent."  Hear me out.

I've been selling houses in this market for years, and here's something most people don't realize: the mayor you elect tomorrow probably affects your property value more than Jerome Powell does.  I know, I know.  That sounds dramatic.  But stick with me.

Here's the thing about local politics that nobody talks about.  Remember when Melrose upgraded their playground equipment and suddenly every young family wanted to move there?  That was your city council at work.  Or when that one town (we won't name names) kept delaying road repairs and buyers started asking, "What's wrong with this neighborhood?"  Yeah.  Local politics.  School committee decisions can swing home values 10-15% in either direction.  That zoning board member you've never heard of?  They're deciding whether your quiet street stays quiet or gets a 40-unit apartment building.  Property tax rates, which are set by your city council, directly impact what buyers can afford in your area.

I've seen this play out in real time over the years.  Communities with engaged, forward-thinking leadership tend to see stronger appreciation, better maintained neighborhoods, and more strategic development that actually enhances property values.  Places where nobody shows up to vote?  Well, let's just say those "What happened to this neighborhood?" conversations get awkward fast.  I've had listing appointments where sellers are genuinely confused about why their home isn't attracting buyers, and it often comes down to local decisions they weren't paying attention to.

Look, I get it.  Municipal elections are about as exciting as watching paint dry.  But your mortgage payment cares about that school budget vote.  Your equity cares about infrastructure spending. Your future sale price definitely cares about zoning decisions.  Ten minutes at the polls today could be the best investment you make in your property this year.  And hey, if nothing else, you get a sticker!
